Alphonse Puthren began his career as an assistant cinematographer in the Vinayan movie Boyfriend. He also has some short films and a music video for the album Yuvv to his credit. Now, he is debuting as director with Malayalam movie Neram starring Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim. The film, which does not fall into any particular category, is a wonderful experimentation by this debutante director. Neram is a dark comedy that has all the quintessential elements including joy, sorrow, mirth and anger. Nivin and Nazriya's performances are the main attraction in the film. Alphonse's script and narration, Rajesh Murugesan's music, Anand C Chandran's cinematography are other highlights of the film. The slow-paced narration is one big drawback of the movie. The movie revolves around the life of an unemployed IT engineer, who runs up debts to marry off his sister. Nivin and Nazriya's chemistry is palpable. Alphonse, who studied films at SAE College in Chennai, has claimed that Neram is a recollection of his own experiences and those of some others he knows. His struggles in the cine world have inspired him to do this film. The film does not have any novelty, but its engaging catchline draws your attention.
