ENGLISH REVIEW

Submmited By Nikhil Edakkott

Shyamaprasad’s new movie ‘English:An autumn in London’ is a multi narrative drama movie, which satisfies you only if you have some patience to spare.
SCRIPT:The plot is very much similar to Hollywood rom-coms.The story revolves around an NRI backdrop, and four main characters.A Kathakali artist who reaches London to fulfill his love,a nostalgic tamil Housewife,a bachelor playboy in search of true love and an adult who has to act as a father and a son at the same time. The story tells about love and bondage between people. The Dialogues are fairly well written. Akkarakazhchakal fame Ajayan Venugoplan used the exact English Malayalam mix the story needed. But at some places the dialogues felt awkward, due to excess usage of ‘sahithyam’.As the story is very good, screenplay isn’t so.The cuts were blunt, scene progressions felt as amateur.Till the half way mark, the film was so lagging, also it wasn’t in the right track. But towards the end the film gained some pace. The changing of Mukesh’s daughter after seeing his affection towards his mother is beautifully portrayed. The twists in the movie are pictusired very well.I personally liked the climax shot were mother seeing Jayasurys’s Kathakali.
DIRECTION:Syamaprasad once told,he make films for himself. He never even copies himself or goes on making same kind of movies over and over. After the much acclaimed ‘Rithu’ he never changed his path to new-gen films, instead he made ‘Elektra’ one of the boldest but weirdest movies in Malayalam.Coming to this one,he excelled in terms of casting and locations. His artistic role is well established rather that an organizer role. All the main charecters were very smooth and relaxing in rendering their performance, like real life, wich was coll to see.
ACTING:In this section, needless to say,Jayasurya was too impressive. His character demanded simplicity,Innocence and softness, which he could deliver with an utmost perfection.Nadia Moidu’s Tamil Brahmin was a good portrayal, especially in terms of dialogue delivery.Mukesh performed a crisised midlife adult with good attitude.Nivin pauly delivered some new mannerisms, which he never shown before on screen. All other charchters performed well[unlike other Syamaprasad movies, where usually side actors performs poorly].
TECHNICAL:Cinematography was a bit disappointing for me.Udayan Ambadi has captured some nice visuals, but generally ankles and color tone wasn’t matching the mood of the film.Editing by Vinod Sukumaran was blunt.Usage of Sync sound made the film more realistic.
SOUNDTRACK AND SONGS:Rex Vijayan’s BGM and Songs, were disappointing. He couldn’t give the exact feel to the scenes.Songs were felt like having no soul. The singers also couldn’t do justice to the songs.
Altogether English is a perfect movie for true movie lovers. This film could have been better if the technical and music section had done justice to the script. With good patience it’s a quite enjoyable movie.
