Good things first. If you are ready to delve deep into director Johny Antony’s Thappana, there is a credible storyline, which could have been made into a fine film. But the real fact is that no such efforts have been made here and the film ends up as a disappointing effort.
Samson (Mammootty) and Mallika (Charmy) have just been released from jail and after some strange incidents; he decides to accompany her on the journey back home. She was convicted for murder and there were even more shocking things awaiting her, when she reaches her home to meet her husband, ‘Kannu Kuttan’ (Murali Gopi).
In a half-hearted way, Mammootty tries to act cool and even funny, even during the tense situations. The way he pronounces any word with ‘s’ has been copied from the Bollywood hit Kaminey. The dance steps from one of the songs, is evidently inspired from the Anjali-Jai video from the Tamil hot Engeyum Eppothum.
Though she barely looks like having spent some years in jail, Charmy comes up with a pretty nice performance. Murali Gopi tries a bit too much to play the baddie. There are quite a number of actors in the film and some of them have no real significance to the main storyline. With fights one after the other, you tend to get bored with the proceedings after a while.
M Sindhuraj’s script is pretty meek and the director barely manages to package his film, beyond the limitations of the script. One gets the feeling that if the film were presented in a more serious tone with more style and passion, things would have been really different.
In the current format, Thappana ends up as a not-so-exciting experience. At just above two hours of duration, the film may not be entirely unwatchable, but that is not exactly that one look forward to when you go for a high profile movie. Right?
